The Trager Approach, named after its creator, Dr. Milton Trager, is an approach to creating ease and harmony between body and mind for increased freedom in movement. The feeling of receiving this work has been compared to the feeling of a dancing cloud.
Movement is patterned, due to the way our nervous system functions, for efficiency. Changing those patterns involves more than just learning a new movement pattern. It actually involves learning new movement “thoughts,” since it is our underlying thoughts that create our ultimate movements. Milton said that “for every tight muscle there is a tight thought.” He taught his students that those thoughts were ultimately what we wanted to reach and change in order for our intentions to create shift for our clients/patients.

“ It's been a long time since I first stepped foot in Madelana's office for my first Trager® Session (two offices ago!) What brought me there was an excruciating pain in my piriformis muscle caused by over-use due to running. I had experienced many physical discomforts resulting from rigorous marathon training, but because I had ignored my body's signals and continued to run and exercise, I was literally stopped dead in my tracks. Seeking medical attention first, the notion of physical therapy three times a week for two hour time blocks was not conducive to the schedule of a full-time working single mother of two. I had to seek alternative options. Having been a yoga student of Madelana's for many years, I felt very comfortable speaking to her about my condition. That began my education of the Trager® Approach. It's not like massage or deep tissue contact, but how I understand it is a movement of energy that has been so deeply stored in every tissue, every fibre, every cell within our bodies. What I quickly realized -- as well as believed and accepted -- is that these physical pains I was experiencing were merely a result of deep-seeded emotions and old patterns I've been hanging on to for a very long time.
